Anna is an artist and writer living in Brighton, Michigan with her husband, their three children, and their big yellow lab – Johnny. She uses layers of colors, textures, paints, inks, and collage elements in her art. She also loves to incorporate words into her work. Her focus is on the creative process, which is an intuitive process for her. She rarely knows where she is headed; instead, she practices staying present in each moment with the eyes of a child – treating her canvas like a playground where she is free to explore – to run wild, to fall, to fail, and to head in a different direction than she might have anticipated. Anna believes the creative process teaches us to trust in the life process – to live in the moment, to let go of what needs to be released, and to remain open to possibilities.
Pursing a creative path is in part a tribute to Anna's father, whom she lost unexpectedly in 2010. He was an extremely creative, free spirited man. In the days after he passed, surrounded by his art and artifacts from his life, Anna developed a deep appreciation for his ability to follow his heart. She had always written and enjoyed being crafty, but it wasn’t until grieving the loss of her dad that she felt called to delve deeper into her own creativity. She learned Zentangle®, took a class in Mixed Media painting, and took numerous Brave Girls Club online classes. When she first attended Brave Girls Camp in 2012, she fell fast and hard for Melody and Kathy and the entire Brave Girls Club team. She is honored to be taking part in Brave Girls University.
In 2012 Anna started Heart Connected as a way to share her passion for using art as a tool for self-reflection. With Heart Connected, Anna writes, teaches Zentangle, facilitates Mixed Media workshops, and hosts intimate retreats for women in her home state of Michigan. It is a dream come true for her to gather with women to share stories and make art together at her retreats - and she is thrilled to be able to share some of what she teaches there with you here at Brave Girls University.
She holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Michigan State University and an MSW from the University of Michigan, School of Social Work. Anna is also a Reiki Master.
Anna is currently writing a book about grief and the valuable life lessons she has learned since losing her dad.
