Hi! My name is Sandi Tygar and I am a mixed media artist. I live in White Township, NJ, a gorgeous rural area, with my 'one' Jeff, 2 dogs and 2 cats. I started making art relatively late in life and have only been actively making art in some form or another for 13 years.
A friend dragged me kicking and screaming to a Creative Memories scrap-booking party and I only went because she promised me there would be wine there (more about THAT later on). Little did I know I would fall in love with the action of creating something all by myself. I loved experimenting with different mediums on my scrapbook pages and have been published in numerous magazines.
In 2009 I did two things that changed my life. I quit drinking and went into recovery, and I discovered a brand new thing called Brave Girls Club. This led me to what was known as Soul Restoration, the first online course at Brave Girls. I am so tickled that I was in the first group of braves to have taken 'SR1', as we call it. A group of us grew so close that we are all still actively friends, and some of us have met in person!
A trip to Brave Girls Camp followed in July of 2011, and as I mentioned before, my life was changed. I morphed from a very scared, very shy, no self-esteem 52 year old that was drinking herself to death, into a happy, healthy and very grateful 58 year old that has found love and given up being scared of life. Instead I'm seizing each moment that comes at me, and enjoying the heck out of this precious gift of life.
New art styles emerged, and I started playing around with collage, painting, clay, sketching... I took tons of online courses from very talented ladies and learned so much...
Now-a-days I work primarily with assemblage art, my true love. I build birdhouses - although I call them birdhomes because they are more than a house... they are truly a home. Jeff and I scour flea markets and garage sales for the rustiest, quirkiest items we can think of that can be attached to the birdhome. I want to work with used parts - I want to recycle, repurpose and reuse old rusty worn things... and make them part of a home - for those are the types of things that have a story attached to them.
When I am commissioned to create a birdhouse, I am not just creating a piece that will sit on a shelf, or hang in a tree... I am creating a home. I am filling it with love, and light, laughter and fun. I am putting a piece of myself in each one. I take each 'thing' and I attach it with intention. These are not just wood and paint and metal... they are living, breathing vessels that hold part of my soul.
My studio is probably my favorite room in my house, and I spend many happy hours nailing and hammering and gluing... and there is usually a dog or two laying at my feet.
My classes are perhaps a little quirky. I tend to be a bit goofy and clumsy, but I guarantee they are always fun, relaxing and will feed the parts of your soul that are hungry.
Most of all, you should know that I manifested the life I am living today. I knew what I wanted my life to consist of, I set my intention and I changed the things that needed changing. *intention - plan - action*
